10. Nigeria Airways Flight 2120 – 261 Dead
On July 11, 1991, passengers fell off from the back of the Nigerian Airway Flight 2120 was coming from Saudi Arabia, heading to Nigeria . A fire had pierced through the floor due to a deflated tire, which had overheated on takeoff. The plane crashed shortly thereafter killing 261 people on board.
9. China Airline Flight 140 – 264 Dead
It happened when the China Airline Flight 140, on the 26th Day of April, 1994, while coming from Taipei, Taiwan to Nagoya, Japan, crashed just when it was about to land. The pilot accidentally hit the take of go around (TOGA) button. When pressed, the button raises up the position of the throttle is on the same level which is used when the plane takes off At least 7 people survived the crash
8. Lockerbie Bombing – 270 Dead
It happened on 21st December 1988. A bomb exploded on Pan Am Flight 103 from London going to New York. The plane was forced to crash land in a field near Lockerbie, Scotland, killing 11 people who were on the ground. Later on, two Libyan nationals were convicted Gadaffi was blamed for the bombing, but he denied any links to it.
7. American Airline Flight 191 – 273 Dead
Moments after take off the American Airline Flight 191’s left engine came off while coming from Chicago,heading to Los Angeles. The plane turned upside down, rolled and crashed into a field. Firefighters on the scene were quoted as saying that not a single complete body was found. The poor safety record of DC-10 was blamed for the casualty.
6. Iran Air Flight 655 – 290 Dead
On July 3, 1988 during the Iranian war, the USS Vincennes shot down an Iranian air flight 655 which was going between Dubai and Tehran due to confused communication,killing 290 people on board.
5. Saudi Arabia Flight 163 – 301 Dead
The plane was headed to Jeddah from Rihadh. It blew up shortly after it took off, turned around and made an emergency landing, but everyone on board perished due to smoke inhalation before the crew could get inside. The cause of the fire was due to butane stoves which were used by Muslim pilgrims due to the strict dietary instructions. They have been since banned, but still some people smuggle them on board to make tea.
4. Air India Flight 182 – 329 Dead
It happened on 23rd June 1985 when a bomb exploded on board Air India Flight 182 killing 329 on board. The plane was flying between Montreal and London and it crashed into the Atlantic ocean, off the coast of Ireland. The people who were responsible for the bomb were Sikh Militants from Canada.
3. Ermenonville Air Disaster – 346 Dead
It happened after a Moroccan baggage handler couldn’t read the latching instructions properly in either Turkish or English on a Turkish airline flight 981. The plane crashed when the latch blew off mid flightinto the forest of Ermonville which is near Paris, in France. By the way, the latch was known to have a design flaw.
2. Charkhi Dadri Mid Air Collision – 349 dead
It is considered as the deadliest mid air collision in history, which happened when the Kazakhstan airlines and Saudi Arabian airlines crashed west of New Delhi and killing everyone in the two planes. The investigation revealed that, lack of English language skills on behalf of the Kazakh pilots was to blame.

Although it was not a single air disaster, the four flights which were involved in the 9/11 were responsible for the greatest single day loss of people in the commercial aviation history. The American flight 11 and the United Airline Flight 175 were responsible for thousands of casualties after they were driven into the World Trade Center, thus considered to be the largest and second largest plane crashes in terms of individual lives lost, in the aviation history; standing at one thousand, seven hundred people and one thousand people dead respectively.
