Homestuck is an internet fiction series created by American author and artist Andrew Hussie. He created the TV show in the first half of the 2010s. It is the fourth and best-known of his MS Paint Adventures. It ran from April 2009 to April 2016. Described as a webcomic, the series relies heavily on Flash animations and instant message logs to talk about the Homestuck characters and convey its story.
The plot focuses on a group of teens who unwittingly bring about the end of the world by installing the beta version of an upcoming computer game, Sburb. They soon came into contact with a group of Internet trolls who are actually horned aliens. They work together to create a new universe by completing the game.
The success has spawned related projects and sequels. While generally a webcomic, Homestuck consists of a combination of static images, animated GIFs, instant message logs, and more. It also introduced complex animations and browser games made with Adobe Flash. The premise of Sburb is sometimes described as similar to games like The Sims and Spore.
If you are a Homestuck fan, you probably know and watched all other MS Paint Adventures.
With that in mind, let’s get to know some of the popular Homestuck characters.
Gamzee Makara
He is one of the trolls and his associated Zodiac sign is Capricorn. His horns resemble those of a goat. Gamzee uses purple as text color and alternates between lowercase and uppercase every letter.
He frequently acts as an advisor or even a therapist to his friends, including Karkat and Eridan. When his friends experience emotional stress, this Homestuck character is there to help them. Sometimes, yet, he suggests to them they should wait for a miracle.
Dave Strider
One of the main characters in Homestuck, Dave is the third kid to be introduced. Obsessed with being cool, he often pursues new ironic depths.
His associated classical element is fire, as indicated by his web browser and the weather outside his house.
Introduced as a really cool dude, he uses profanity by far the most out of the four kids. He also has a tendency to speak using strange metaphors. He also developed the habit of talking to himself out loud.
Vriska Serket
Known by her Trollian handle arachnids Grip, she is also one of the trolls, the eighth troll to be introduced. It refers to her theme and obsession with the number eight.
Her handle relates to her in two main ways. For starters, arachnids refer to her interest in and fascination for spiders. The grip part represents her power to have a grip on someone’s mind and control it.
More often than not, she is a huge bitch. Vriska gets easily bored and makes shady deals with people. And like her massive spider, she often manipulates others. Despite everything, she is a popular character among the Homestuck fans.
Sollux Captor
Another troll in the show, his Zodiac sign is Gemini. He has two horns on each side of his head. They represent the Number two and duality as a theme for the Homestuck character. His duality is a reference to binary code and his talent for computer programming.
He speaks with a bit of a lisp, which is probably a reference to the programming language Lisp. Sollux is famous for combining two sentences into a single line, but with no punctuation except for the single period at the end.
His username is a reference to the fact he will die twice and the second being the end of the two universes. He often seems introverted and reluctant to talk to others.
Caliborn
The male cherub with cherry red blood from a dead session of the game shares a body with Calliope. He was confirmed to be the young Lord English.
His name is a reference to a certain puppet. He is the most alien of all the voiced characters. Calliborn has a terrifying obsession with playing games.
But despite his game obsession, he is apathetic towards Sburb. He sees it as a means of escaping his dead home planet.
Karkat Vantas
Another troll and a main character, both components of his handle serve as a form of foreshadowing. He is a geneticist of sorts, the creator of the pre-scratch and post-scratch trolls. But he is also genetically breeding cancer into Bilious Slick.
His sign is the sign of the Signless. He is a crabby troll and spends a lot of time insulting and ranting about friends and the kids.
Many believe his demeanor was inspired by the Cancer sign, with Cancerians being moody and crabby.
Terezi Pyrope
She is another main character in Homestuck with an associate Zodiac sign, Libra. She has pointy teeth like Karkat, but her horns are conical and not curved like the ones of most trolls.
She was supposed to be the leader of the Red Team. But Karkat convinced her to revoke that position to him.
She can be civil, flirty, and derisive in her interactions. Terezi has a drive for justice that sometimes results in cruel actions.
Tavros Nitram
His handle refers to bullfighting. After all, he has huge bull horns that are a reference to his associated Zodiac sign, Taurus.
He types in reverse case. For example, he replaces periods with commas. But he also uses an excess of commas, which gives the impression of uncertainty or shuttering.
Tavros is too sensitive to be a decent troll. In some cases, he even tries to help Jade and other kids. Many times he ends up getting trolled.
Rose Lalonde
Another main protagonist, she was originally named Flighty Broad by Kanaya Maryam. Yet that name was rejected, and she called Rose.
Her web browser of choice is Cetus and has her classical element water. It is evidenced by the water running through her house and her associated item, chalk.
She has a similar physical stature as John Egbert and wears a headband and a shirt. Her interests include a passion for obscure literature and creative writing. But she is very secretive about her writing interest.
Dirk Strider
The post-scratch incarnation of Dave’s Bro, his web browser is Yaldabaoth. It was given to him by the game due to his natural skills as a warrior.
He tends to brag about his achievement, especially those involving robots. He enjoys criticizing Jake and his infatuation with the fictional character Neytiri.
Feferi Peixes
She is one of the Alternian trolls. As an Alternian troll, her associated zodiac sign is Pisces. Her horns are shaped like the top half of her astrological sign.
Feferi is a sea dweller and former heiress to the throne of the Alternian Empire. During the game, she was on the Blue Team.
She is highest on the hemospectrum, and she is a radical reformist. She wants to make Alternia a nicer place by redefining the word culling to mean “caring for the unfit”.
Equius Zahhak
Looking at the character list, we have another troll. His associated Zodiac sign is Sagittarius. He has one broken and one arrow-shaped horn. He uses the terms 100 and 001 to replace “loo” and “ool” sounds where they appear in words. For example, look, fool, pollute.
He often references mythical beasts and speaks with a tinge of superiority. The use of centaurs in his chumhandle is a reference to Greek mythology. There, Sagittarius was identified as a centaur.
He is a complicated and disturbing troll. Equius is a firm believer in the blood caste system.
Jade Harley
We have to talk about another main protagonist, the fourth kid to be introduced. Jake has long black hair and round glasses. She wears a shirt with a constantly changing blue picture on it.
She has a quirky personality. Oftentimes, she dozes off to sleep and then wakes up without any recollection of ever falling asleep.
But she has proven to be brave and resourceful. Jade Harley cares deeply about her friends.
Jake English
Jake English is a young man living on a Pacific island in a room that used to belong to Jade in the pre-scratch universe. His browser of choice is Abraxas.
Jake loves adventure and brawling. He writes in a peculiar fashion. But despite his action-loving mood, Jake is not assertive and extremely clueless socially.
Doc Scratch
Let’s finish off the list of Homestuck favorite characters with an officer of Lord English. Doc Scratch is also the first guardian of Alternia. He was meant to protect the planet and facilitate the ultimate purpose.
Doc is a skilled manipulator. He appears as a humanoid figure in a white and green suit with a white handgun.
He has a head shaped like a cue ball. Andrew Hussie developed him to be the devil figure of the series.
