What Does a Nose Ring Mean?

The custom of body piercing has existed for thousands of years in the Middle East, Africa, India, and North America. Nose piercing is part of many traditional rituals. Often, it marks a crucial moment in someone’s life. For example, entering adulthood or getting married.

What a nose ring means depends mostly on the region where the person wearing it originates. In the Western World, it is a relatively new practice. But the custom of wearing nose rings has been around for thousands of years in places like Africa and India.

In those places, a nose ring holds symbolic significance and it is integrated into the culture. In the West, however, a nose ring is associated with being defiant and against traditional norms and values.

It is both a beautiful accessory, but also a symbol of status, wealth, and prestige. Tupac wore it as an act of rebellion. In the Western World, many people have adopted the practice of wearing a nose ring as being somewhat rebellious.

When you wear a nose ring as a wealth symbol, the bigger the ring, the wealthier the person. It is also important on what side do people wear their nose ring.

For example, if you are a guy, you need to pierce your left nostril. Girls pierce their right nostril. Why is that? Because a man who has a piercing on the right nostril represents being gay, while a woman piercing her left nostril represents her expression as a lesbian. Of course, there is nothing wrong with being homosexual. But if you are a straight person, be careful about the side you choose.
