Horror films are a thing of popular culture. Male villains have gained much popularity over the years that knowing who Dracula and Frankenstein are have become universal pseudo-facts. These characters have succeeded in scaring people across many generations.

Amelia in the horror film The Babadookwas a single mother who has trouble coping up with the demands of single parenthood. She is raising a child that is also being wanted by a demonic force, and she battles that force – and later on herself – to keep her child safe and to free herself from the powers of darkness.
8. Annie Wilkes – Misery
Kathy Bates did not only win an Academy Award for this role,but she also created one of the most frightening female villains in Hollywood film. As the deranged nurse Annie Wilkes, she takes a famous author as her prisoner until the author brings Annie’s favorite character back to life. Bates’ performance was so convincing that the film easily became the scariest Hollywood film of 1990.
7. Carrie White – Carrie
Sissy Spacek’s tour de force performance as an outcaste high school senior in this late 70’s film still gives the creeps even to today’s generation. Carrie was a rather kind but a little too eccentric teenager struggling to be accepted by her peers. She gets the humiliation of her life during prom night, and gets back at her tormentors with a taste of bloodthirsty vengeance. Her final scenes in the movie were horrifyingly unforgettable.

This 1999 Japanese films remains to be one of those Asian films with a very brutal liking for torture. Shigeharu Aoyama plays a middle aged widower convinced by her son to go back to dating to remedy her loneliness. When she is jilted by her suitor, she devices a brutal plan to kidnap the poor man and finish him off. This film features one of the most brutal scenes in Asian horror film history. It is bound to really give you nightmares!
5. HelenaMarkos – Suspiria
This 1977 horror film features a promising ballet student who travels to the heart of Europe for some serious ballet training. Soon, she discovers that her school is far more sinister and deadly than what she initially thought it was. The mother of all evil, Helena Markos, appears towards the end of the film – all uglified and villified. One of the most stunningly horrifying Italian films of the 70’s, it has since gained a cult following.
4. Sadako – The Ring (Japanese Original)
Heavily remade all over the world including Hollywood, the original is still by far the scariest. One of the forerunners of the Asian horror genre, the ring has in the center Sadako, a vengeful spirit who kills everyone on her way. That scene with Sadako coming out from the television set is particularly creepy!

An all-out psychopath, Vera Ellen Wilson or Baby Firefly is a childishly sweet girl out to lure unsuspecting victims into her family’s death trap. All visitors to the Firefly family home are bound to have a bloody death that is one for the books!

Insidious is one of the best horror installment franchises in the last few years – more so because of its creepy demonic characters, particularly the bride in black. Astral projection has never really been depicted in the film this way and the bride in black is that one female villain that really keeps you up at night!
